The long-standing Irish tradition of abandoning abortion will be a thing of the past.

The country held a referendum in which two thirds of the country's residents expressed a desire legalize abortion on the territory of the state. Only one-third - 33% of Irish people wanted the ban to continue.

Since 1983, in Ireland, there was an amendment to the Constitution, which equalized the rights of a woman and a child in her womb.

Both the woman and the kid conceived by her, according to the law, were recognized equal and had equal right to lifestarting from the moment of conception.

At the end of the last century, the amendment was proposed by representatives of the Catholic Church, whose influence in Ireland is strong today.

Abortions were banned and an exception was made only in extreme cases, if further gestation of the fetus was a real threat to the life of the pregnant woman.

To make an abortion because of abnormalities in the development of the baby, as well as after rape or incest was not possible - these circumstances were not considered significant for interruption.

Because of the moratorium, many Irish residents had to travel to abort the UK to other countries where the laws are not so strict.

A new abortion law after the referendum will appear during the summer. They will parliament.

According to the new law, Irish women will be able to have abortions. without explanation up to 12 weeks of pregnancy. In later periods, interruption will also be possible, but only under strict medical indications.
