Why do babies die - an increase in infant mortality is recorded in the regions with perinatal centers

The Accounts Chamber of the Russian Federation has revealed a frightening and incomprehensible fact - in the regions of the country where modern perinatal centers were built, infant mortality increased. Now experts are looking for an explanation for this phenomenon.

The official report of the joint venture, in particular, points to an inexplicable increase in infant mortality in the Kaluga, Tambov, Oreburg, Samara, Nizhny Novgorod, Chelyabinsk, Penza regions, as well as in Khakassia and Kabardino-Balkaria.

In all these regions, perinatal centers were recently launched, which were built at the expense of the federal budget.

In total, 26 regions of the country participated in the program of building centers for pregnant women, women in labor and newborns, but the sad statistics were recorded only in the nine listed above.

The specialists of the Accounts Chamber, who found shocking data, insist that the Government of the country and the Ministry of Health conduct serious checks and analyze the reasons.

The official state statistics is harsh and undeniable. Thus, for six months of 2018, the infant mortality rate in Kaluga increased by 23%, in the Tambov region by 14%, in Nizhny Novgorod - by 37.2%. In the Samara region, 4.8% more babies died than a year earlier.

In the Chelyabinsk region, the increase in infant mortality was 26%, in Kabardino-Balkaria - 3.8%, in Khakassia, the figure increased by 31%. In the Penza region, the increase in mortality was 17.9%.

The program for the construction of modern perinatal centers was developed by the Government of the Russian Federation in 2013.

Total costs for the construction of these centers today amounted to 83.7 billion rubles.

The goal of the program is improve the quality and availability of medical care for women in childbirth and babies, as well as for women with pathologies of pregnancy.

Why in nine regions the death rate of children began to grow when working perinatal centers remains to be seen. There will be several probable causes to consider - the qualifications of doctors and the quality of medical care, factors independent of doctors (number of congenital abnormalities), etc.
