Flogging can not be pardoned: France banned physical punishment of children

French parliamentarians passed a law on prohibition of physical punishment of children. Most deputies voted for him. From now on, parents are forbidden to use force against sons and daughters. With this decision, the parliament decided to support common European norms and bring its legislation in line with European ones.

Changes that involve responsibility for moms and dads who have risked raising a hand, a belt, or something else on a child are planned to be made into the Civil Code.

All newlyweds during the registration of marriage will be obliged to read out the provisions of this law.

It states that parents are obliged to assert their authority in the family in the eyes of the child, without resorting with physical and mental abuse. Not only whipping and cuffs, but also verbal pressure on the child is now prohibited.

Now the law must be approved in the Senate and in the National Assembly, after which it will enter into force.

Earlier, French parliamentarians tried several times to pass this law, but in each case the vote did not bring a convincing victory - the conservative parties opposed the abolition of whipping, because they believe that and the belt has a place in certain cases in education.

Statistics show that up to 85% of parents in France periodically practice corporal punishment for their children in families. Therefore, society was divided into two groups: some actively support the new law, others resent and bewilder, because they do not know how to act now on disobedient children.

France will be the 55th country in which it is forbidden to smack children. In 52 countries of the world, minors are prohibited from beating only in schools and places of detention; this prohibition does not apply to families.

In a number of countries for parents who decide to violate a legislative ban and grab the belt, criminal liability is provided - mothers and fathers of Great Britain, Sweden, and the United States can go to prison for whipping a child. In Canada, whipping a child in a family is not prohibited, but any objects cannot be used for whipping. In Russia, the punishment of children is not physically prohibited by law, but the responsibility of the mother and father can be incurred if the fact of repeated physical punishment is established and proved.

Until the beginning of the last century, whipping was considered a matter not only habitual, but also incredibly useful. The Chinese flogged children to prevent disobedience with bamboo, the Persians with a whip, the Russians with rods, the British with sticks. Leather belts flooded children only in Switzerland.

Spanking was a normal process of education not only for children from poor families, but also for children from the nobility. Flogged even the imperial children.

The first to speak about the dangers of flogging babies in Russia was the Empress Catherine the Great. She even wrote recommendations “On the education and guidance of grandchildren.” The first school in our country without a rod was opened by Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy.
