To understand whether this drug is necessary for a small patient and how exactly it helps against allergies, it is better to learn about its mechanism of action, allowed doses and possible negative effects before using Avamys.

Release form

Avamys is a product of the famous company GlaxoSmithKline. It is produced in one form, which stands nasal spray. It is dosed and can hold 30, 60 or 120 doses. In the form of syrup, tablets, solution for injection and other forms of "Avamys" does not happen. The drug original packaging, which is a glass orange bottle, placed in a plastic case. Under the blue removable cap that protects the drug from clogging or dust, there is a spout through which the medicine is sprayed into the nasal cavity.

Through it, you can control how much solution is left inside the bottle by looking at the package to light. The drug itself is a white suspension.

Composition

The active ingredient of Avamys is fluticasone, which is represented in the preparation in micronized form in the form of furoate. Its amount per spray dose is 27.5 mcg. In addition, the medicament contains dispersible cellulose, edetate disodium, and polysorbate 80. It also contains purified water, a 50% solution of benzalkonium chloride, and dextrose.

Operating principle

Avamys is a group of glucocorticoid drugs, because its main ingredient is a synthetic glucocorticosteroid. Once on the mucous membrane, it binds to glucocorticoid-sensitive receptors and has a strong anti-inflammatory effect. Usually, the therapeutic effect becomes noticeable 8 hours after spraying. The drug affects the release of substances that enhance the inflammatory and allergic reactions.

In addition, it has a positive effect on the microcirculation at the application site, provoking the narrowing of the capillaries and the reduction of exudation. Among the effects of Avamys there is the ability to stabilize cell membranes (during an allergic reaction, the effect on mast cells is particularly important). The result of this action will be the reduction of swelling and redness, the elimination of itching, the prevention of the spread of inflammation.

After spraying in the nasal cavity, the drug is absorbed in a small amount and undergoes metabolic changes in the liver, therefore dysfunction of this organ can affect the treatment with Avamys. Removal of the drug occurs mainly with bile through the intestines.

Indications

The main reason to assign "Avamys" child is allergic rhinitis. The drug is in demand and with year-round rhinitis, and with seasonal disease. It is also often prescribed for adenoids, when excessively enlarged or swollen tonsils interfere with the child’s breathing through the nose. However, the application for such a problem or for adenoiditis should be only as prescribed by a doctor.

Sometimes ENT doctors include Avamys in the treatment of rhinopharyngitis or sinusitis (for example, they are prescribed for sinus), especially if the disease is caused by an allergic reaction. In this situation, the drug is designed to help with nasal congestion and reduce the activity of inflammation.

How old is allowed?

Avamys is used in patients older than two years. If a child is not yet 2 years old, he is not prescribed such a spray, since it can be harmful to a growing body and its safety for babies of the first two years of life has not been studied enough.

Instructions for use

Before using the medicine for the first time, it is necessary to vigorously shake the closed vial for 10 seconds so that all the components of the solution are well mixed. Next you need to remove the cap, send the tip away from you and, several times pressing the button, wait for the medication to be sprayed in the air. After that, you can begin treatment. Shake the packaging is necessary and before each subsequent use of the spray, because the drug is thick suspension, and after shaking its consistency will be more liquid, which will facilitate spraying. In order to inject the medication, you should push the button firmly with one thumb or with the fingers of two hands (you can see how to do this in the pictures in the paper instructions).

The nasal passages of a child must be cleared of secretions before using Avamys. The tip of the case should be inserted into one nostril and directed not towards the nasal septum, but towards the outer wall. The bottle should be placed vertically. After asking the child to inhale with the nose, spray the medication once, then remove the tip of the nebulizer and ask to exhale with the mouth. Next, you need to repeat all the actions for the second nostril.

The frequency of application is once a day, and if the therapeutic effect is weak, an increase up to two doses per each nostril is acceptable (only 4 doses per day). As soon as the symptoms of allergy begin to pass, the dosage is reduced back to two sprays per day, injecting the medicine with one click on each nasal passage.

For treating a teenager (if the child is already 12 years old), as well as for adult patients, it is recommended to start therapy immediately with 4 doses per day, performing immediately two sprays of Avamys into each nostril. When the symptoms subside, the dosage should be reduced to two sprays per day, that is, one per each nasal passage, if this is sufficient for maintenance therapy.

The duration of the use of the spray is determined for each small patient separately, because it affects both the form of the disease and the reaction of the respiratory tract to the hormone, and the emergence of any ailments during treatment.

In this case, the systemic action of the drug and any illnesses were not revealed. Therefore, if the dosage prescribed to the child is accidentally exceeded, it is recommended to simply monitor the condition of the little patient. If the parents are on their guard, the child must be shown to the doctor.

Reviews

Most reviews about the use of "Avamys" call this medicine effective and quite convenient to use. According to parents, the spray quickly eliminates the swelling of the mucous membrane, but does not provoke addiction and drowsiness. Its disadvantages are usually the fact that the remedy is hormonal. In addition, you can often see complaints about the high price of Avamys, due to which many parents are interested in cheaper counterparts.

Doctors also speak about this drug mostly positively. They note the effectiveness of this spray and call it safe for young patients, but do not recommend using it without medical prescription. This is the opinion of the famous pediatrician Komarovsky.

Analogs

If it became necessary to replace “Avamys” with a similar medicine, they often use “Nasonex". Such a popular drug in the form of a spray in the nose also contains glucocorticoid hormone - mometasone. He, like "Avamys", has anti-inflammatory, as well as a pronounced antiallergic effect, therefore, is in demand in the treatment of allergic rhinitis. This medication is also allowed from 2 years, is not addictive and has a predominantly local therapeutic effect. Other medicines based on mometasone may be used instead, for example, "Desrinite" or "Nozephrine".They are also available in the form of metered sprays and have the same effect.

Other analogs of Avamys include:

  • Fliksonaze nasal spray. Fluticasone is also its basis, but in this medicine it is contained in the form of propionate. The drug is prescribed to children with prolonged allergic rhinitis, aged 4 years and older. An analogue of this drug is Nazarel spray.
  • Drops "Dexamethasone». Although they are intended for the treatment of eye diseases, many ENT specialists include them in complex nasal drops, combining with antiseptic, vasoconstrictor, antimicrobial, and other means. However, without a doctor's prescription, children should not drip "Dexamethasone" into the nose.
  • Spray "Nasobek". The action of this medication provides beclomethasone, due to which the medicine is effective in rhinitis, provoked by allergens. The drug can be used in children from six years.
