How often should I change a pacifier and how to take care of it?

Content

Having decided to give the baby a pacifier, parents need to learn more about how to care for this product. Why do they need to be changed regularly, how long can one nipple be used and how to properly sterilize it?

Reasons for replacement

Permanent sterilization of pacifiers leads to their rapid wear. With prolonged use, they may appear cracks that pose a risk to the health of the baby. Replace them on time.

Material classification and usage time

The frequency of the change of the pacifier is primarily affected by the material from which it was made:

  • Latex species differ not very long service life. Using it constantly, you will notice how it will lose its shape, and its walls will begin to stick together. In addition, microcracks occur in the latex, in which microorganisms easily settle. Because of this, the latex versions of the pacifiers are replaced every 2-4 weeks before the product has become dark and deformed.
  • Silicone Models have greater strength, so they last longer. However, such an accessory is easier to bite through, and getting even a small particle of such a nipple into the infant’s body can be dangerous. It is recommended to change it every 3-5 weeks, even if the product is whole.
Latex Soothers
Latex soothers need to be replaced more often.
Silicone Soothers
Silicone soothers are easy to bite through, so if you have teeth, it is recommended to replace it at least once a month.

Sterilization

Before each use of the pacifier, as well as when the child has dropped it, the product should be sterilized.

Boiling

The easiest processing methods include boiling. Pour some water into a small saucepan, and letting it boil, put a soother into the water (it is important that the water completely covers the product) and hold it in a boiling liquid for 2-3 minutes. Do not worry about whether the product can withstand boiling - they are made with the expectation of frequent sterilization.

Steam treatment

Steam is a quick way to sterilize. The product is held for several seconds over the steam from the spout of the kettle. Note that with this treatment there is no guarantee that all bacteria from the nipples have been removed, but if there are no other options to process the pacifier, this one will do.

A safer alternative would be to use a double boiler. But in the microwave you can handle not all pacifiers - be careful!

In stores with baby products also featured special sterilizers. Processing a pacifier or bottle in such a device takes approximately 3 minutes.

  • For convenient storage, we recommend using special cases.
  • It is impossible for an adult to lick the soother before using it, as there may be microorganisms unsafe for the infant in its mouth.
