When choosing a medicine that will help cure a child’s cough, many mothers tend to take herbal remedies. One of these remedies with expectorant action is Bronhikum. In what forms is it produced, how is it dispensed and when is it used in childhood?

Release form

Pharmacy range includes the following options for the drug:

  • Syrup. It is a reddish-brown transparent liquid with the smell of honey, poured into 100 ml bottles. Normally, it may have mild opalescence or a slight sediment. Dosing cup is attached to the syrup bottle. Also, the syrup is produced in portion mini-bags of 5 ml foil, packed in a box of 8 and 20 pieces.

Composition

The main component in any form of Bronhikum is a liquid extract obtained from thyme herb. In the syrup, this extract is represented by a dose of 150 mg per 1 ml of the preparation, and in one pastilka 100 mg of this ingredient is contained.

The extractants in any form of the drug are ethyl alcohol, glycerin, water and ammonia solution. Invert syrup, cherry juice concentrate, rose oil, liquid dextrose, sucrose solution and honey flavoring add sweetness and smell to the syrup. Also, the drug includes purified water, sodium benzoate and citric acid.

Additional components of lozenges are levomenthol, stearic acid and acacia gum. In addition, sucrose and silica are present in this form of medication. Also in the pastilles there is povidone, magnesium stearate and cineole.

The elixir also contains liquid thyme extract in an amount of 5 g per 100 g of the drug, but it is supplemented with another active ingredient - liquid extract from primrose roots (it contains 2.5 g in 100 g of elixir). Only water, sodium benzoate and syrup from glucose, fructose and sucrose act as auxiliary substances of such Bronhikum.

Operating principle

The active herbal components of the drug have an expectorant effect, as well as lower the viscosity of sputum and help it quickly withdraw from the bronchi. An antimicrobial, bronchodilator and anti-inflammatory effect is also noted in the medication.

Indications

The tool is prescribed for inflammatory diseases of the respiratory tract, a symptom of which is a cough with a hard-to-discharge secret. The drug is used for tracheitis, bronchitis and other diseases.

At what age is it allowed to take?

At the age of up to one year, only syrup can be used, since treatment with this form of the drug is allowed from 6 months. Elixir is used in children older than a year, and the drug in the form of lozenges is prescribed from 6 years of age.

Contraindications

The drug should not be prescribed to children with hypersensitivity to thyme or other components of the drug, for example, in case of fructose intolerance. Also, the drug is not used in heart failure, severe renal pathologies, and severe liver failure. If a child has epilepsy, a brain injury or other brain pathology, it is necessary to use the drug in an elixir or syrup very carefully.

Side effects

  • Some children have an allergy to lozenges, syrup or elixir. It may manifest in the form of urticaria, swelling of the face or skin rash.
  • The digestive system of young patients rarely responds to treatment with liquid Bronhikum nausea and other symptoms of dyspepsia.

Instructions for use and dosage

Before each use, the liquid form of the medicine should be shaken, as a precipitate may appear in the syrup or elixir. Depending on the age of the little patient, syrup is given in the following dose:

Children from 6 months to a year

Twice a day for half a teaspoon (2.5 ml)

Baby 12-24 months

Three times a day half a teaspoonful (2.5 ml)

Children 2-6 years old

Twice a day for a full teaspoon or 1 mini-bag (5 ml)

A child aged 6-12 years

Three times a day for a whole teaspoon or one mini-pack (5 ml)

12 year olds and older

Three times a day, 2 teaspoons or 2 mini-bags (10 ml)

Elixir is prescribed to children 1-4 years old to 1/2 teaspoon three times a day (daily dose - 7.5 ml). A single dosage of such a drug for children over four years is 1 tsp. At the age of 4-12 years, four times the dose is recommended (20 ml of the drug per day), and children over 12 years old can take the elixir up to 6 times a day (only 30 ml of the medicine per day).

Medicine in lozenges offer to dissolve the children in the mouth up to three times a day. A single dose is 1 pastille, but if a child is already 12 years old, it can be increased to two pastilles per reception.

The duration of treatment is determined on the basis of the clinical picture, but on average, the medication is prescribed for 10-14 days.

Overdose

Excess doses of any form of medication does not have a toxic effect on the children's body.

Interaction with other drugs

Bronhikum treatment should not be combined with the appointment of antitussive drugs. If you give the child this drug at the same time with a medicine that blocks the cough reflex or prevents the production of sputum, it will interfere with the expectorant effect of the drug.
